Here’s the honest truth: Humboldt County is one of the most pet-friendly communities I’ve ever encountered.
If you’re buying a home here, pets are simply not a limiting factor. Whether you have dogs, cats, or a small menagerie of animals, you’ll find that buyers with pets face no meaningful obstacles in the purchase market. Many properties here — with their larger lots, rural settings, fenced yards, and access to open land — are ideal for families who own animals.
My advice when buying with pets: think beyond the home itself. Look for:
- Lot size and fencing — Does the yard work for your dogs? Can it be fenced if it isn’t already?
- Proximity to trails and open space — Humboldt has extraordinary access to parks, state forests, and coastal land. Your dog will thank you.
- Rural vs. urban tradeoffs — A property outside city limits may offer more land but less infrastructure. Make sure the lifestyle fits both you and your animals.
- Zoning for livestock — If you have horses, goats, or other animals beyond household pets, confirm the zoning and lot size requirements before you fall in love with a property.
For renters, pet restrictions are more of a real challenge — landlords vary widely. This is another reason that buying, when financially feasible, is often the better long-term answer for pet owners.
